7/01/02 Dear Mike Maloney,
I have a terrible problem this year with poison ivy growing in my ground cover, myrtle etc. What can I do to stop the growth without killing the ground cover?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff in Adrian , Mi
I?m just itching to help you with your problem!
Poison ivy is an irritation wherever it pops up, but when it grows in groundcover it is especially annoying. There's a way you can eliminate the weed without destroying the groundcover, but it requires plenty of patience on your part.
Roundup is an herbicide that can kill poison ivy. Unfortunately it can also kill the groundcover. However, if you are very careful you can apply the Roundup to the foliage of the poison ivy by using a small paint brush to coat the poison ivy leaves without allowing it to touch the foliage of the groundcover. Because of the nature of Roundup it will translocate from the foliage of the ivy to the root system and kill the plant. You may need to reapply the material a second time in order to achieve a complete kill.
Please wear gloves when doing the application and please follow the instructions on the Roundup label
Keep Your Green Thumbs Up1!!
